IRVINE, Calif., (Jan. 30, 2025) — Zymo Research, a global leader in molecular biology and pathogen detection technologies, reaffirmed its commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship by sponsoring the 2025 Microbes in Wastewater: Antibiotic Resistance, Public Health, and Climate Change Symposium. Funded by the Aladdin Bioinformatics Foundation, the event was held January 16–17, 2025, in Newport Beach, California. The symposium was co-hosted by the Aladdin Bioinformatics Foundation, the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, the University of California at Irvine, and the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, bringing together over 200 attendees, including thought leaders from government, industry, and academia.

This year’s symposium provided an impactful platform to explore the intersection of public health, climate change, and wastewater research. Distinguished keynote speakers, Dr. Chris Mason of Weill Cornell Medicine and Dr. Kartik Chandran of Columbia University, along with 16 other well-known experts, shared insights on emerging technologies shaping wastewater surveillance. Attendees also engaged in dynamic panel discussions and explored a poster session showcasing the latest research in the field. Beyond the stimulating talks, a dinner cruise around Newport Harbor gave attendees the chance to network, collaborate, and build connections that will advance wastewater research and its role in addressing global challenges.

“The Aladdin Bioinformatics Foundation is thrilled to see the Microbes in Wastewater Symposium emerging as a hub for leading-edge science and global health solutions,” said Dr. Kyle McClary, Director of Data at Aladdin Bioinformatics Foundation. “We are especially grateful to Zymo Research, who from the very beginning has fueled this collaborative not only as a sponsor, but as a thought leader and key scientific contributor. Together, we are excited to build on this momentum in our next symposium – and ultimately, to transform how we address emerging health threats worldwide.”

A Shared Vision for Sustainability and Public Health

Speakers emphasized wastewater’s transformative potential as a resource for developing environmental and public health solutions. Panels explored its role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate resilience, highlighting innovative approaches to sustainable wastewater management. Attendees also discussed the societal benefits of wastewater research, from monitoring community health trends to tackling antibiotic resistance on a global scale. The symposium explored groundbreaking advancements in molecular techniques, including digital PCR, shotgun metagenomics, and other NGS sequencing technologies, which enable highly sensitive pathogen and antimicrobial resistance gene detection in wastewater. These clinically significant insights can inform targeted mitigation and treatment strategies to protect community health.
